Book Review

17 AND GONE
by Nova Ren Suma

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Young Adult

RT Rating

A truly original novel, different from anything else on the shelves. Suma portrays female relationships with poignant honesty; the relationship between Lauren and her single mother is complex, layered and strikingly realistic. Most notably, Suma blends the real with the fantastic so seamlessly that readers will question everything.

Lauren is turning 17, and suddenly she’s in turmoil. Her once uneventful life becomes plagued with visions of disappeared girls. Soon Lauren is obsessed with the missing girls; they speak to her in dreams and hallucinations. She can’t function normally, losing friends and her boyfriend. Convinced she can help the girls, can she deal with her demons alone? (DUTTON, Mar., 368 pp., $17.99, ISBN: 9780525423409, HC, 14 & Up)
