Neggers has created yet another well-matched pair of characters and given them a crackerjack mystery to solve -- complete with a seriously creepy villain. There's also a generous helping of comic relief.

Taking a weekend off to get over being dumped by FBI agent Andrew Rook nearly costs Deputy U.S. Marshal Mackenzie Stewart her life. But when Mackenzie is assaulted, she gives as good as she gets, and the man runs off. Then, adding insult to injury, Rook comes to her rescue! What Mackenzie doesn't know is that he's looking for an informant connected to her friend Bernadette -- which is also the reason he ended their relationship. Mackenzie's determined to be involved in the case. Besides, Rook's conflict of interest won't last forever -- and neither will his good intentions. (MIRA, Jun., 384 pp., $7.99)
