Book Review

THE AFFAIR
by Alicia Clifford

Genre: Mainstream, General Mainstream Fiction

RT Rating

There is no grand conflict and no stunning denouement here. There is nothing but life in this novel, well captured and described. The essence of this story is about a family; as with all families, there are few people you really like in the novel but you will love and/or relate to each of them. Distracting perspective changes and a tendency to dwell on less important characters are detrimental to the greater story.

Celia Bailey married a charming military officer and seemed to live a perfect life. Her naïve expectations of marriage and her willingness to suppress her own ambitions, joys and desires have brought her to a place of quiet dissatisfaction. After her death, her family uncovers an almost secret life that Celia led in full view of them, causing them to question how well they knew her, how well they listened to her and how much they viewed the world through the colored lenses of their own selfishness.
