Alers introduces readers to Adina Jenkins, a young woman who seems to be on a collision course with a violent end. In this skillfully crafted story, Adina morphs into Dina Gordon and begins a journey to save her own life. Fast-paced and well-written, this novel will have you cheering for Dina in the end.

After overhearing a death threat, hustler Adina decides it's time to take her savings and hit the road running. To get a new start and a new identity, she connects with lawyer Karla King, and through her, finds a legitimate job with caterer Sybil. She also meets Lancelot Haynes, an older man who becomes enamored with Dina.

Dina's new friends are intelligent and skillful in their own right, and they also have some extracurricular activities that are just this side of kinky. Karla and Sybil may seem to have nothing in common with "Dina," but they are exactly who she needs to survive. (Kimani/arabesque, Mar., 352 pp., $14.95)
