A very suspenseful look at people trapped in a freeway collapse after an earthquake, Sorenson skillfully manages to show good character development while keeping the plot realistically taut. A thrilling disaster story!
Lauren is on the job responding to a call for paramedics when the freeway collapses, and she’s trapped in a huge cavern, sealed in by rubble and crashed cars. As she tries to assess the disaster, she meets eight other people wandering in what could become their tomb. A guy named Garrett, who appears to be ex-military, helps her set up a triage. Together they find an RV with a grandfather and his granddaughter, a very pregnant woman, several very badly injured people and some threatening looking convicts. Garrett and Lauren quickly realize they must fight off thirst, hunger and the convicts if they are going to get out of this alive. (HQN, Jan., 384 pp., $7.99)
