Book Review

AGAINST THE ROPES
by Sarah Castille

Genre: Erotic Romance, Contemporary Erotic Romance

RT Rating

The best way to describe this book is Fifty Shades of Grey meets Fight Club, only lacking Chuck Palahniuk’s subversive writing and thought-provoking themes. Makayla is the doe-eyed ingenue, unable to eat in a nice restaurant without being gauche, and Torment is a stereotypical alpha male. His “secret identity” will be no surprise to those familiar with the genre, and while the sex is hot, you’ll probably feel like you’ve read this one before. Fans of Fifty Shades will undoubtedly love this book, but the plot combines two tropes desperately in need of new tricks.

Makayla agrees to help her friend, Amanda, sell tickets at an underground MMA fight, never dreaming she’ll be pulled into that world. But then she meets Torment: top fighter, tattooed hottie and all-around fantasy fodder. As Makayla learns more about Torment, she’s not sure she can envision herself with him long term, especially when he begins ordering her around, making decisions for her and stalking to the extreme, which forces Makayla to confront a past she wants to forget.
