In this charming, fast-paced romp, Duncan delivers an exciting and enjoyable tale that features a likable hero whose adventures will entertain even the most jaded of fantasy readers.

Alfeo Zeno, apprentice to alchemist Maestro Nostradamus, spends his days writing letters, mixing potions and running errands -- until one night the Council of Ten arrives to take his master into custody. Suspected of poisoning a high-ranking friend of the prince, the Maestro refuses to flee Venice and instead sets Alfeo on the trail of the real murderer.

Forced into investigating the crime, Alfeo uses all the resources that he can command, from gutters to the palaces of Venice. What he discovers in the course of his investigations is dangerous and rife with political intrigue, but he has no choice but to see it through to the end if he wants to survive.
