This entry in Burke’s Ellie Hatcher series continues to flesh out the heroine; readers witness her struggling with commitment issues in her personal life and friction with her detective partner, Rogan. There is no lack of suspects, twists and surprises, and the plot keeps readers guessing until the end. Ellie is a great character with a no-nonsense approach and an (almost) flawless gut instinct.

When a murder has the same M.O. as that of an incarcerated serial killer, a celebrity lawyer adds the case to her list of reasons to free a convicted murderer. NYPD detectives Ellie Hatcher and JJ Rogan are the “fresh look” team assigned to determine if evidence in the original trial was tainted. The high-profile lawyer hires a young attorney, the half-sister of one of the victims — a victim whose murder doesn’t fit the mold of the other killings — in an effort to further bolster the wrongful conviction claim. It seems like everyone has something to hide, but Hatcher and Rogan are working to uncover the most deeply buried secrets. (HARPER, Jun., 368 pp., $26.99)
