Once again, Lang scores big with a well-researched tale that provides an inside look at the seedy side of Denver in the 1880s. The prose is descriptive, and the characters are authentic. Lang reminds the reader that our patience is developed when our faith is tested.

Dessa Caldwell is starting to lose hope in her dream of opening Pierson House, a place to help “women of the night” start a new life. She needs a loan, and many banks have turned her down. Her last option is Henry Hawkins. Though he believes it is a bad business decision, Henry allows his uncle to approve the loan. Henry has a secret criminal past that he fears may come to light. Both Dessa and Henry must choose whom to trust and whether or not to follow God’s plan. (TYNDALE, Apr, 400 pp., $12.99)
