A charming and fast-paced debut that capitalizes on the steampunk craze. This entertaining novel has a compelling and engaging protagonist as Violet Adams is smart and self-reliant. Fans of Shakespeare and Wilde will delight in the transformation of the source material into something wholly original.
A mash-up of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, this is the tale of Violet Adams, a young mechanical engineer in Victorian London who wants to study at Illyria College but cannot because she’s female. Her twin brother lets her use his identity for a year and she gains admittance as Ashton. It’s more difficult than Violet expected to keep her sex secret, especially since she draws the attention of both the school’s headmaster, the Duke of Illyria, and his young ward. Violet becomes embroiled in intrigues and outright enmity with a fellow student, Malcolm Volio. It will take all her considerable intellectual prowess to survive. (TOR, Oct., 416 pp., $24.99)
