THE ALLOY OF LAW
Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy
Set 300 years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, this is an engaging and fun romp of a read. The characters really shine in this book — Wax and Wayne (groan) are great partners and their relationship and banter are definite highlights. While the main plot is resolved, there are a few dangling plot threads: could a sequel possibly be in the works?
Waxillium Ladrian, a twinborn, has returned to the city of Elendel after spending 20 years in the Roughs, enforcing the law and enacting a rough frontier justice by way of shooting lawbreakers a lot. Wax needs to make his way in polite society in order to restore his family’s fortunes. While at a fancy dinner party with Steris, his prospective bride, a gang of criminals takes her hostage, the result of which is an epic gunfight in which Wax and his longtime deputy, Wayne, feature prominently. Wax has no choice but to investigate, and what he finds will teach him that the civilized veneer of the city truly is only skin deep. (TOR, Nov., 336 pp., $24.99)
