Daheim is still writing strong stories 22 volumes into her Alpine series, and this one is first rate! Although newcomers may be a bit confused about the characters’ shared history, fans of the series are sure to enjoy another visit with Emma, Milo, Vida, Leo and the rest of the residents of Alpine, Wash. A thrilling subplot involving Milo puts this one in the “white-knuckle read” category.

Ten years ago, Larry Petersen went to prison for killing his sister — but did he? Someone sending anonymous letters to Sheriff Milo Dodge and newspaper editor Emma Lord thinks Larry is innocent. As Emma and Milo try to link the old murder with the shooting of a reclusive local artist, Emma’s on-again off-again relationship with Milo reaches a new level. (BALLANTINE, Apr., 336 pp., $25.00)
