Armintrout’s latest is a creepy ride into the town America forgot. Vampire Graf McDonald and Jessa Gallagher, a lady stuck in this forgotten little burg, are an interesting match. The characters are tough and distrustful and at times a little unlikable. The story is dark, but readers will enjoy the supernatural aspects of this story. The rapid race that details Graf and Jessa’s relationship will have readers on the edge of their seats from the beginning to the finish.

Graf McDonald is on his way to a party weekend that does not include a side trip to Penance, Ohio, and a run-in with the very prickly Jessa Gallagher. Jessa was trying to survive in a town where no one gets in and no one gets out. Caught in isolation for the last five years with a monster on her tail, she and the rest of the town have regressed into paranoia, where various alliances have left her even more isolated. Enter Graf, uncertain as to how he wound up in town, with no blood and no way out. At first Graf sees Jessa only as a potential food source but when the world around them unravels, he begins to feel attracted and protective. Then the town turns against Jessa and Graf, and they must join forces in order to make it out alive. (MIRA, Mar., 336 pp., $7.99)
