Local attorney Becky Baldwin comes to famous crossword puzzle lady Cora Felton looking for help, as she knows of Cora's past exploits in solving cases. Darryl Daigue is serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole for killing a young woman, but Darryl has an alibi for the time of the murder. No one believed him 20 years ago, but now he has Cora on his side.

As Cora begins to investigate, however, she's faced with a new murder. She enlists her niece Sherry's help and together they decide to bring down a killer who has escaped justice for too long.

This is a wonderful addition to the Puzzle Lady series—and, surprisingly, it's not light. Cora is a gritty protagonist who is tremendously exciting to watch. The story moves along smoothly, deftly revealing the killer. This installment raises the bar for this series and is a wonderful, involving read. (Oct., 320 pp., $24.00)
