Augusta Goodnight, Guardian Angel, is back for her fourth adventure, and Kate McBride, whose marriage is failing while her relationship with her daughter suffers, is the mortal in need of help. When Kate goes to a family reunion, she encounters new problems requiring help from above.

An attempted murder takes Kate's mind off of her personal problems, as do appearances by Augusta, who tries to help Kate solve the mystery. Then a 40-year-old skeleton is found, and it takes Augusta's divine intervention to find the culprit.

This is a fun read. Characters sparkle, and the plot moves swiftly. Ballard sprinkles just enough humor throughout the story for many laugh-out-loud moments. The other books in the series have been great, but this one is a standout. (Jul., 288 pp., $23.95)
