When 40-year-old Southerner Annie Macy's wedding ends before it begins, she heads for New York to uncover the truth about her mother's life and death 24 years before. Annie's father hires former police detective Joe Brady to watch her and send her home. But Annie is soon involved in the case for which Joe turned in his badge, running from gangsters and trying to stay alive. Annie on the Lam: A Christmas Caper (2), by Jennifer Archer, is not up to Archer's usual high quality. The characters are sympathetic but not believable. Annie is too immature to be 40, and her supposed Southerness feels artificial. Plus, the story is convoluted and improbable.
