Mix humor with evil and a dash of romance and you get this truly butt-kicking first-person series. Rardin proves she's no flash in the pan with the second Jaz Parks adventure, which leaps from one exhilarating escapade to another. The gradual bonding and deepening of relationships enriches the story and heightens the tension.

After stopping an ancient demon on her last case, CIA agent Jaz and her vampire partner, Vayl, have formed a unique crew that consists of Cassandra, an ancient seeress; Bergman, a biotech genius; and Cole, a former P.I. Their current assignment: track down a nasty vamp, Chien-Lung, who's stolen one of Bergman's inventions, body armor that makes him nearly invincible. If that's not trouble enough, there are some extremely nasty fiends called Reavers who are just dying to rend Jaz limb from limb. All in a day's -- or night's -- work! (ORBIT, Dec., 352 pp., $12.99)
