The mystifying world of angels beckons in the second installment of Singh's remarkable urban fantasy series. Picking up the action right after the big revelation at the conclusion of Angel's Blood, Singh again focuses on vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and lethal archangel Raphael. Treachery and viciousness are staples of this shadowy world, which allows the awe-inspiring Singh to give her story a jagged edge. Better clear off more space on your keeper shelf!

The realization that vampire hunter Elena has been transformed into an angel has sent shock waves throughout the Cadre of Ten. As Elena figures it, now not only are the vampires gunning for her, they're after the angels too. A summons to a ball thrown in Elena's honor by the oldest archangel, Zhou Lijuan, concerns Raphael greatly. He knows that Lijuan has been resurrecting the dead. Elena is as weak as a child and has only weeks to gain strength and the ability to fly. An attack on the Angel Refuge, where Elena is training with angel children, proves that someone will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. (BERKLEY SENSATION, Feb., 338 pp., $7.99)
