This novel details the opulence available to officers and their friends in a small village away from the front where information is dispatched, as well as the struggles of Resistance members. Three-dimensional characters add depth to a captivating plot.

Isabella Ricci is a country girl who becomes an important member of the Resistance after her brother is executed by the Nazis. Her participation is minor at first but is spurred by her lover, the zealot Massimo. On one of her first assignments she meets the dashing Captain Günter Schumann, who holds a post in the German headquarters in town. As they become entangled, Massimo pushes Isabella to use that relationship to gather intelligence. He insists she make a duplicate of Günter’s keys so she’ll have access to restricted areas during her clandestine excursions into the Nazi offices. Then she makes two mistakes: She falls in love with Günter and she gets caught breaking in. (WILD ROSE, Sep., 306 pp., $14.99)
