Keeping the books for a working ranch, doing housework and caring for a 5-year-old would sap Savannah Perez's energy even if she weren't expecting a second child and watching the magic fade from her marriage. Cruz works from dawn till dusk on the ranch and refuses to take his wife's concerns seriously. It's not until she leaves with their son that Cruz begins to understand how serious the situation is. Marie Ferrarella's A Baby Changes Everything (3) paints a sometimes uncomfortably real portrait of a marriage, right down to the repetitive, cyclical arguments and the commonplace reasons for them. And though circumstances prompt Cruz's eventual change of heart, readers may find his turnaround abrupt after all that's passed.
