Devlin’s fourth Red Stilettos story does not have her usual lively characters. The primary and secondary characters are indistinguishable and their personalities are flat. Steamy sex scenes may satisfy readers not looking for a strong plot, but the underlying premise is overly familiar: friends passing around a “magical” object.

Jolene Ledbetter is tired of wondering about the direction of her relationship with policeman Gabriel Devine. She decides to give him an ultimatum: man up and commit or let her go. Jolie has support from her best friend and an enchanted pair of shoes that helped her friends find true love. Gabriel keeps his distance from Jolie so that she will not mourn him if he falls in the line of duty. Yet her scheme to bring their relationship to a head may have scandalous consequences. Soon Gabriel realizes the treasure he has in Jolie, but is it too late? (ELLORASCAVE.COM, dl $8.90)
