What Shelby Barrett really wants for New Years is a diamond ring and a marriage proposal from her longtime boyfriend Matt Armstrong. When neither happens, a frustrated Shelby decides to send herself flowers from a fictional David Jones. Problems arise when Matt tracks down the very real David Jones who works in the next building.

David has no idea who Shelby is when Matt angrily bursts into his office. However, when an apologetic Shelby shows up to explain, David finds himself intrigued. Suddenly he wants to be the other man in Shelbys life.

Shelby turns to her mother, romance author Diana Barrett, to help sort out her tangled emotions. But Diana is suddenly under romantic siege from Matts all-too-attractive bachelor uncle, Lance Gregory. With everyone interfering in everyone elses relationships, things are bound to get messy.
