The first book in the Broken Destiny series is a fast-moving tale that refuses to let up until the end — when we realize there’s a long way to go until the world as we know it is safe. Unexpected humor abounds, whether it’s in the dialogue or inventive disguises given to our stalwart, albeit reluctant, heroine. Books don’t get more fun or action-packed than this.

There’s a lot going wrong in Ivy’s world: Her adoptive parents have died, and her sister Jasmine is MIA. While searching for Jasmine, legions of demons and otherworldly meanies want Ivy dead. Her appointed rescuer, Adrian, tells her that destiny dictates he will one day betray her. Ivy isn’t abandoning her rescue mission without a fight, and Adrian seemingly wants to help. But how will Adrian’s presence affect her journey? (HQN, Sep., 304 pp., $14.95, ISBN: 9780373779055, PB, 18 & Up)
