Book Review

THE BEDLAM DETECTIVE
by Stephen Gallagher

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Mystery, Historical

RT Rating

Set in 1912, this is a well-written book with a keen feel for the times. The hero is an especially interesting character. His wife’s son, who’s very intelligent but suffering from some emotional problems not understood at the time, adds an interesting personal note.

Sebastian Becker, special investigator to the Masters of Lunacy, has been sent to Sir Owain Lancaster’s house to determine whether the land owner is still sane. Sir Owain is suspected of losing his mind after a misadventure in the Amazon region that left his family dead — a tragedy he blames on creatures who have followed him home. When Becker arrives in the village, he learns that two girls have been killed. Is it the work of Sir Owain’s monsters? (CROWN, Feb., 256 pp., $25.00)
