BEHIND HIS BLUE EYES
by Kaki Warner

Genre: Historical Romance, America
Sensuality: HOT
Setting: 1870s Colorado

RT Rating

Warner brings readers back to Heartbreak Creek in a spin-off series centering on railroad advance men. While introducing a new couple, she brings back her original characters and lets readers catch up with old friends. As emotionally powerful as her other novels, in Behind His Blue Eyes, Warner slows the pace by tackling broad themes of guilt, dementia and post-partum depression and incorporating flashbacks to build her character motivation.

Audra Pearsall doesn’t have time to ponder what’s behind Ethan Hardesty’s eyes; she has too many problems of her own. With her father’s dementia worsening, Audra moved from their home in the east to claim an inheritance in Heartbreak Creek. Ethan was an up-and-coming architect when an accident at one of his buildings destroyed his career. He now works planning the right of way for the railroad and, when the plans are for the tracks to cross her land, Audra is set to stop them. Then, a murder, a wildfire and strange accidents plague the railroad. Just as Ethan and Audra begin to develop trust, the editor of the town’s newspaper casts suspicion on Ethan. Soon, Audra is caught in the middle. (BERKLEY SENSATION, Aug., 380 pp., $7.99)
