Reviled in Ruff, Arizona, as the daughter of a criminal, Madeline Shay, Native artist, is keeping to herself while working toward a better life. Chief Carson Cody knows Madeline all too well, unable to escape the memory of her father, who's alleged to have killed his wife and hidden money from a crime. Carson's investigation and concern for Madeline's safety brings them into closer proximity than either could have expected. Sheryl Lynn gets kudos for penning a heroine of ethnicity in BEHIND THE SHIELD (4), as well as satisfactorily resolving the leads' conflicts, though the plot does turn on a few contrivances.
