Lucy West and Kate Cunningham have been best friends for more than 10 years, as are their husbands and their 4 children. They have all spent time during the summer vacationing at Lucys Nantucket home that she inherited from her aunt.

Throughout their friendship Lucy has kept Kates secretsbrief trysts when away from her husband, her constant companionship with a man dying from AIDSand Kate idealizes Lucy and tries to emulate her.

Lucy is forced to deal with a workaholic husband, a semi-rebellious teenager, panic attacks, a stillbirthand the heartbreaking discovery that her youngest son has cystic fibrosis. Secrets are brought to light that test the strength of their 10-year friendships.

There were a few surprises in this interesting story. Emotional scenes were well written and touching but the flashback sequences made distinguishing then and now oftentimes confusing. Reprint. (Jan., 320 pp., $7.00)
