BETWEEN LOVE AND DUTY (4) by Janice Kay Johnson: When shop owner and guardian ad litem Jane Brooks is assigned to protect the interests of a young teen named Tito Ortez whose father, soon to be released from prison, wants to regain custody, she meets police captain Duncan MacLachlan, who’s been acting as the boy’s unofficial big brother. Because of his own bad parents, Duncan is determined to do right by Tito. While he and Jane clash over his methods of making sure the boy’s father will be a deserving parent, attraction sparks between them. Duncan’s emotions ring true given his backstory, and both Jane’s and Duncan’s inability to commit seems quite real given both characters’ emotionally stunted childhoods.
