Carlotta Carlyle, Boston's streetwise P.I., is back in action and at the top of her game as she agrees to work for Eddie Conklin, a former cop now heading a private security firm. Carlotta's assigned to various sites of "The Dig," Boston's Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel Project. Amidst allegations of graft and fraud, Carlotta goes undercover at the offices of Horgan Construction.

Fortune is smiling on Carlotta as she receives another assignment, locating one missing Veronica James for her friend and housemate, Beacon Hill resident Dana Endicott. Carlotta senses that all is not on the up and up when Dana refuses her access to the missing girl's room.

Soon, an "accidental fall" occurs at the construction site, leaving Liz and Gerry Horgan harried and falling behind on the project. But tying up loose ends is what Carlotta does best, as she leads the reader on a wild ride to the gripping conclusion. (Oct., 288 pp., $23.95)
