BITTER NIGHT
by Diana Pharaoh Francis

Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Urban Fantasy

2009 Urban Fantasy Novel Nominee

RT Rating

Fantasy author Francis shifts to the urban fantasy mode with the launch of the gritty and potentially apocalyptic Horngate Witches series. Francis' heroine Max is a volcano of seething anger and hatred. All of her storytelling talents are on vivid display as readers are sucked into this chilling world. Awesome!

Thirty years ago Max's former college friend and roommate forced her into magical slavery. A powerful witch, Giselle used spells and torture to turn the incredibly stubborn Max into a weapon, a Shadowblade. Max now leads her 13 warriors as they protect both Giselle and the magical enclave of Horngate.
A witches' conclave has been called because the ancient, extraordinarily powerful guardians of Earth have decided to wage war on humankind. The guardians offer a simple choice: Join them or die. To save Horngate, Max will have to forge dangerous alliances and work with the witch she despises. (POCKET, Nov., 400 pp., $7.99)
