Nantus kicks off her Tales from the Edge series with a fast-paced, well-crafted tale of murder and mystery in outer space. While some readers may not get past the notion of a traveling, government-sanctioned, legitimate brothel bringing relief to miners stuck on distant worlds, those who do will root for the hero and heroine as they attempt to bring a criminal to justice and offer closure to a murdered girl’s friends and family. The author’s worldbuilding — or in this case, shipbuilding — is spot on, and the literal lack of gravity takes the story to new heights.

Shortly after opening for business on the mining planet of Branson Prime, one of the Mercy Ship Bonnie Belle’s courtesans is discovered dead in her cabin. Captain Samantha Keller locks the ship down and calls for assistance; Sam has seen enough death to know what murder looks like. Tension among the miners waiting for appointments with the courtesans runs high and Sam is itching for a fight, but the arrival of Marshal Daniel LeClair changes things. Sam has an ally now, an honest law man who wants to see justice served. While sparks sizzle between Sam and Daniel, the two must find out who killed Halley Comet before the Guild takes over and buries the truth forever. (CARINAPRESS.COM, dl $2.99)
