If you’re a fan of the Black Wings series, be still your beating heart. The heartwrenching ending of Black Howl will be a fleeting memory because Madeline Black, Agent of Death, is back. Maddy is a strong character, but she is always relatable and that keeps fans coming back for more. The great snarky dialogue, continuous action, excellent worldbuilding and innovative twists on urban fantasy conventions are par for the course in Henry’s series.

Just as Maddy thinks she’s lost it all, she learns that she has something more to lose: Discovering she is pregnant gives her the hope that she’s needed to persevere. When Lucifer tells her that he plans on keeping her baby in order to combine two bloodlines and acquire more power, she finds a strength she forgot she had. Madeline Black will stop at nothing to prevent her grandfather from taking her child — she just needs to learn how. (ACE, Oct., 288 pp., $7.99)
