BLACK MAGIC SANCTION
While the eighth volume in Harrison's wildly successful Hollows series is generally an entertaining and likable read, one does tire of seeing Rachel Morgan on the defensive all the time -- if it's not demons or vampires after her, it's other witches. Hardcore fans will find much to love in this book, but less dedicated readers should probably wait for the paperback.
Rachel Morgan has fought nearly every kind of creature imaginable, and now she must fight her own kind -- other witches. The ruling coven has shunned and denounced her for dealing in black magic, and they're willing to use any means necessary to get Rachel under their control. At best, Rachel faces life imprisonment, and at worst, a lobotomy.
Rachel, of course, is having none of this, and with the help of her colleagues, friends and family, she concocts a plan that will get the coven off her back -- at least until their next public meeting. But not even Rachel can predict how much her survival is going to cost her, or just how high the stakes are. (EOS, Mar., 496 pp., $25.99)
