A combination of history, myth and adventure produces a book that will appeal to Clive Cussler fans. While an engrossing read, it can be slow and less emotionally intense than some readers may like. However, it’s a good thriller that fans will not want to put down.

The National Research Institute, a secret agency of the United States government, is attempting to find mysterious radioactive crystals. The crystals are believed to provide a source of endless clean energy. As would be expected, the bad guys want them too.

In the Amazon, NRI operative Danielle Laidlaw discovers a Mayan carved stone emitting waves of energy. Using a Mayan map and a prophecy that points to the end of the world, Danielle and her team try to find the answers while evading the bad guys. (BANTAM, Sep., 472 pp., $7.99)
