While going through her late mother's belongings, Rebecca finds a journal detailing her mother's involvement in a horrific crime. Twenty-four years ago, William Blackhawk faked the death of his two nephews and his niece and sold them to the highest bidder. His cohorts were Rebecca's mother and two other men. Although the children were later reunited, Rebecca feels she must right this wrong by bringing the two other living men to justice.

She begins by tracking down Blackhawk's estranged son, Dillon, and pleading with him for help. He has enough personal demons to battle without taking on Rebecca's, but when someone tries permanently silencing her, his protective instincts prevent him from turning his back on her. As they close in on their prey, Dillon and Rebecca turn to one another for comfort and find unexpected passion.

McCauley continues her Secrets! miniseries with this not-to-be-missed single title. The absorbing tale grabs the reader from the beginning and doesn't let go until the last startling secret is revealed. A secondary story blends well, and loose ends are nicely tucked away. (Dec., 304 pp., $5.99)
