Fifteen years ago, Julia Garrity and Kristin Shuttleworth went trick or treating in their hometown of Lily Dale, NY. All went well until they arrived at 10 Summer St. For Julia, it was just a routine stop but Kristin saw something there, something that literally haunted her for the rest of her days. Although Kristin's family moved away, whatever she saw that Halloween stayed with her until her mysterious disappearance and death.

Kristin's lover and their blind six-year-old daughter, Dulcie, have come to Lily Dale and though she may not be able to see with her eyes, she still has visions which concern people who aren't there. Julia is sure that somehow Dulcie knows what Kristin saw that long ago evening and what it was that caused Kristin to meet her fate. Julia approaches Dulcie but her questions lead to a release of evil that threatens all that comes in its way.

IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE is a deliciously creepy tale that will hold the reader fascinated as its plot unfolds. The supernatural overtones, though, may not be every mystery fan's cup of tea. (Mar., 448 pp., $6.99)
