Piper did a great job setting up this new series with the first book, and this second knocks it out of the park. Tallis is the quintessential broken man: no family, no friends and questioning everything about his life. He sets out to destroy Kavya yet is drawn to her. The romance between them is swoonworthy, the sexual tension red-hot and it’s suggested you find a chunk of free time or you’ll be reading long into the night, unwilling to put this book down.

Tallis Pendray, the Heretic, is done listening to the prophecies of the woman who comes to him in dreams, and he’s about to end the cult of the woman they call the Sun. Kavya Indranan has only two goals: unite her fractured clan and avoid her murderous brother. When Tallis indirectly saves her life while trying to thwart her, they end up fighting for the same outcome —- and each other. (POCKET, Aug., 280 pp., $7.99)
