Burkhart gives readers a story with strong characters and an interesting plot steeped in Mayan history. For those who love this type of story, this one is for you. If you are not used to this type of read, however, it may be harder to follow.

Dr. Jaid Merritt is a beautiful historian whose specialty is Mayan history. Unfortunately, the last time she went out on a dig, someone died. Now she deciphers Mayan glyphs sent to her from her father’s excavations. When he goes missing on an important project, however, Jaid has no choice but to go after her father in Guatemala. Mayan priest Ruin opens the Bloodgates to bring back his brother, but unfortunately, he did it wrong. Realizing his mistake, Ruin is cursed by the gods to stand as the guardian for all time. He tries to stop Dr. Charles Merritt from opening the gates, but he fails, and now demons roam the world.
