Santa Fe is a vivid character in this book, impacting the characters, the mystery and the crime. This complicated and excellently written story moves quickly, is realistic and has an interesting set-up where the two main characters are almost never physically together.

During a yearly festival in Santa Fe, people can burn mementoes of the past year they wish to leave behind. This year, the skull of a small child is discovered in the ashes. It might belong to a child who disappeared a year earlier during a family picnic, Detective Gil Montoya and newspaper editor Lucy Newroe investigate. (MINOTAUR, Jul., 288 pp., $24.99)
