2006 Young Adult Novel Nominee

Zusak's new novel is not typical young adult fare: It's the story of a girl living in Nazi Munich and is narrated by Death. Books like this don't come along often for young adult readers. This extraordinary gem will affect adult and young readers equally.

Liesel has been forced into foster care because of the politics of the Nazi era. Her only happiness is in the books she steals and, later, through her foster father's kindness and her friend, Rudy. Before the war is through, young Liesel will live a lifetime's worth of pain and loss. (Mar., 512 pp., $16.95, ISBN: 0375831002, 12 and up.)
