Fire and ice make for an incendiary mix in the newest High Risk novel by the always excellent Ross. These strong-willed protagonists were once on opposite sides of a court-martial, but now they must work together. Watching their stimulating relationship develop while they're immersed in a murder case shows how skillful a storyteller Ross is. Brava!

Former JAG officer Julianne Decatur and ex-Air Force combat controller Dallas O'Halloran once faced each other across a court- martial table; now they both work for the government's highly classified THOR group. No longer adversaries, they feel embers of attraction start to fan to life.

Julianne and Dallas have been assigned to look into the case of a Navy flyer's supposed suicide, and it doesn't take long for them to suspect murder. Two more suspicious deaths indicate that there could be a conspiracy at work. If so, how far and deep does it go? With the deaths piling up, it appears the killer or killers will stop at nothing to protect their secrets. (SIGNET, Jul., 400 pp., $7.99)
