In the second of the Brides of Wishmore series, as one sister weds, another learns her fate is to marry a man no one loves. Readers already know the heroine is naïve, spoiled and even unlikable. How Maxwell allows Tara to change into a woman who makes better choices and learns to love is a testament to her talents. Readers may wish that the story does not rush to its end so they can savor this charming romance.

Ruined by scandal, Tara Davidson is a pariah. Once she had her pick of suitors, but now her father has “sold” her to Breccan Campbell, the Beast of Aberfeldy. As laird, Breccan must restore their clan’s good name. But he cannot stop himself from spending all their money to have Tara as his bride. Breccan sets out to win her love and woo her into his bed. Tara is unprepared for the feelings Breccan stirs within her. When Tara realizes the sacrifices he has made for her, she is determined to help him win respect for the Campbells and show him how much she loves him. (AVON, Mar., 350 pp., $7.99)
