This tale brings the WWII Pacific front to life. Jio beautifully portrays the excitement of a nursing career as an opportunity for women to engage in the war effort. The ending has too many convenient coincidences to be fully convincing, but it is an interesting and original tale nonetheless.

During WWII, Anne Calloway postpones her wedding to serve in the Army Nurse Corps in Bora-Bora. While there she meets and falls in love with a soldier named Westry who is far more enchanting than her predictable fiancé back home. After witnessing a murder that she and Westry are forced to cover up, their romance begins to fall apart. They are soon separated when Westry is re-deployed, and despite her wish to follow him, Anne returns to the fiancé who awaits her. It is not until much later that she learns what became of Westry and the truth behind the crime she witnessed. (PLUME, Mar., 320 pp., $15.00)
