BUTTERCREAM BUMP OFF
by Jenn McKinlay

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Mystery, Amateur Sleuth

RT Rating

McKinlay’s descriptions of the cupcakes in Mel and Angie’s shop are guaranteed to make the reader salivate — fortunately the recipes are included in the back of the book. Engaging characters, hilarious situations, old movie quotes and, oh yes, a dead body in a hot tub make this a great read, even if it is pretty easy to figure out “whodunit.”

Mel’s mother hasn’t gone out with a new man in over 30 years, so when her beau is murdered in the middle of their first date, Mel, Angie and Tate are determined to find the killer. While Angie falls in love with the victim’s rock-star son, Mel’s love life with Joe is going nowhere. And Tate isn’t exactly sure what he’s done to make Angie so angry. With everything happening in and around Fairy Tale Cupcakes, the trio almost forgets the raffle they’ve organized in honor of Valentine’s Day. (PRIME CRIME, Jan., 240 pp., $6.99)
