Judge Deborah Knott is back, along with Maron’s other protagonist, NYPD Lt. Sigrid Herald. This is the second time Maron has joined her two series and she does a good job of splitting the perspective and writing distinct voices. As always, Deborah’s huge family is a delight and source of humor.

Judge Deborah Knott takes time out of her busy schedule to entertain visitors. Sigrid Herald is in town with her mother to visit her dying grandmother. At a dinner with the ladies, they meet Martin Crawford, an ornithologist who’s in town to learn all about buzzards. But Sigrid’s mother is sure that she has met him before. When a murder is discovered, Deborah, her husband Dwight and Sigrid must figure out if the new visitor has more secrets than he is letting on. (GRAND CENTRAL, Nov., 320 pp., $25.99)
