This new series is off to a promising start, pairing paranormal elements with a gladiator setting. While the world- building is confusing at first — dragons are the deities the Dragon Kings believe created their race; there are no actual dragons here — the fusion of the two settings is sure to appeal to fans of both paranormal and fantasy. The tension and developing relationship between Audrey and Leto will keep pages turning at a fast clip, and the setup for future books is sure to have readers coming back for more.

Audrey MacLaren left the world of the Dragon Kings, choosing to live as a human rather than live among those who didn’t accept her marriage to her human lover. Ten years later, following the murder of her husband, Audrey is forced back to her old life, but in the underground world of Cage warriors, where only the desperate go. She and her new trainer Leto soon discover that both of them have been viewing their lives with a single-minded purpose, and there may be much more at stake than training to fight.
