CALLING THE SHOTS (4) by Ellen Hartman: When his hockey-playing daughter Allie beats up a boy at practice, Bryan James is forced to go to mediation with Clare Sampson and her son, Tim. In spite of his worry over Allie, who is dealing with what she sees as her mother’s desertion of her to go on a reality show, and his own difficulties at work, Bryan is attracted to Clare. He gets caught up in her inability to settle down and become close to anyone because of her own past with a sister who died from a terminal illness. Hartman places her characters in a situation anyone could face. Both Clare’s and Bryan’s emotional baggage is realistic, and many readers will be able to identify with them.
