Book Review

This is the fourth book in the Codex Alera series, and while series fans will likely enjoy it, newcomers will be lost in the maze of characters and plotlines. There's not nearly enough exposition and things get off to a very slow start: lots of talking, very little action.

Two years into the conflict with the invading Canim warriors,
Tavi of Calderon and captain of the First Aleran Legion is stuck. He's realized that the Alerans face a far greater peril than that posed by the Canim, and wants to ally with them to defeat the vord, the terrifying force that drove the Canim from their homeland. But the newly appointed military commander wants to wipe out the Canim forces. Tavi must find a way to unite them against a common foe before all
are destroyed. (Ace, Dec., 464 pp., $24.95)
