CARPE DEMON: ADVENTURES OF A DEMON-HUNTING SOCCER MOM
by Julie Kenner

Genre: Mainstream, Paranormal

RT Rating

Retired demon hunter Kate Connor's skills are admittedly rusty, which is why she misses spotting the demon in her local Wal-Mart. But when that same demon attacks her in her home, it gets Kate's attention quickly. Fourteen years ago, Kate and her now-deceased first husband both retired from the "Forza Scura" demon hunter ranks and settled down with baby Allie. After Eric was killed, Kate married Stuart Connor, an attorney with political ambitions, and added Timmy to the family. Kate's past is a secret to her family—and she wants to keep it that way.

Regrettably, the powerful demon Goramesh is not going to leave her alone, so Kate needs to get back into fighting form quickly. Nevertheless, she's going to have to find a way to stop this nasty menace while working around her already tight schedule of kids, shopping and throwing dinners.

This is what would happen if Buffy the Vampire Slayer got married. Kenner scores a direct hit with this offbeat and humorous adventure, which has an engaging cast of characters. Car pools and holy water make an unforgettable mix. (Jul., 368 pp., $12.95)
