Kaylin, a Hawk in what passes for the city of Elantra's police department, has learned, to her dismay, that a job well done is usually rewarded with another job, generally more dangerous.

Summoned to the Barrani High Court, she is tasked with healing the youngest son of the High Lord. Unbeknownst to Kaylin, this will pull her into a maelstrom of dangerous intrigue from which she'll be lucky to escape with her life.

With the second book in a series, there's an expectation on the part of the author that the reader will already be familiar with the world it's set in. But this can greatly confuse a new reader, especially, as with this series, when Kaylin has a tendency to jump from task to task and not really listen to what her friends and enemies are telling her. Still, this is a fast-paced novel, packed with action and adventure, and Sagara does a decent job of integrating the conventions of police procedurals with more fantastic elements.
